Trip to NYC — Sat., 11/19; tkts on sale 11/15, noon

Hey Students,

Want to spend a day in New York City for only $10? The Wesleyan Student Assembly is organizing a bus trip to New York City on Saturday, November 19th. We’ll take you to some of the world’s most famous tourist attractions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Times Square. Students are given opportunities for dining (not included in the ticket), shopping, and exploring some part of the city themselves. Buses will be leaving Wes at 9 am and will be returning to campus around 10:30 pm. Final itinerary will be sent out to students prior to the day of departure

Ticket sales will begin on Tuesday at noon in the box office and online. Only the first 50 people will be able to join this great adventure with us! Feel free to email adong@wesleyan.edu or zmalter@wesleyan.edu if you have any questions. Hope to see you in New York next Saturday!

Looking for program housing this spring? Apps due 11/18

Looking to move into a Program House this Spring ????

Most of our program houses will have vacancies this Spring (at this time, it looks like there will not be any vacancies in Music House, Sign House or The Bayit).  The Office of Residential Life will be opening up the application process for Program Housing on Monday November 14th

 What you’ll do:

  • ·         Apply to up to 3 program houses by visiting our website (http://www.wesleyan.edu/reslife). 
  • ·         The first step is to fill out and submit a housing preference form consisting of basic information and your preferences for specific program houses
  • ·         The second step is to fill out subsequent program house specific applications–the links to those applications will be available after you submit your preference form.  Please note that the housing vacancies remain fluid since vacancies will be filled by those coming back from abroad and residents who are switching between houses. 
  • ·         The third step is to wait for an offer.  The DEADLINE for this application process is Friday November 18th.  Offers will be extended the week of November 21st.   After placement occurs from this round of applications, a second round of open bids for existing vacancies will occur on Wednesday November 30th (these second round candidates will be selected from the applications of those who were not placed during the 1st round). 

*If you currently reside in a program house and are looking to move to another program house, you MUST fill out your application during the first round of applications which are due on Friday November 18th.  You will not be eligible to move into another program house if you do not apply by the deadline and receive an offer from this process.

*There is no pull-in process for program houses.  All those interested in program house vacancies must go through this application process!!

Projects for Peace — Mon., 7 p.m.

Projects for Peace:  Info Session Monday November 14, 7pm, Usdan 110

Come find out how to apply for this $10,000 grant to support projects promoting peace during the summer of 2012.  All Wesleyan undergraduates are eligible to apply and interested applicants are strongly encouraged to attend one of the info sessions. Applications are due Friday January 27.

48 Hour Magazine Project — Starting Friday Noon

48 Hour Magazine Project 

We are going to write, edit, design, and publish a magazine over the course of forty-eight hours.

We’re seeking writers, photographers, artists, filmmakers, designers (both print and web), copy editors, and anyone else who thinks this is even remotely a good idea. Your efforts will define this project because we can only make it happen with a great team of contributors. You can spend anywhere from one to forty-eight hours with us, assisting with any or every step of the process. Experience is not necessary.

Here’s how it will go:

At noon on Friday, November 11th, we will announce the magazine’s theme, a loose topic that you can use as a jumping-off point for your work. We’ll also have a selection of prompts, prods, and suggestions if you’re looking for a little extra direction. Over the next forty-eight hours, you will join us in selecting and editing content, establishing the magazine’s graphical and editorial identity, and designing the print and web editions. You’ll even get to help choose the name.

Why bother? It’s going to be forty-eight hours of frenzied fun and free food. When we’re done we will have an awesome magazine to distribute throughout campus (for free!), and we will weep joyous tears of elated exhaustion and/or exhausted elation.

“The Poojari’s Daughter,” film by Prof. Goslinga — today, Nov. 10, 5 p.m.

The Department of Religion, in concert with the Department of Anthropology, is pleased to announce the campus film premiere of “The Poojari’s Daughter” an ethnographic film by Anthropology faculty member Gillian Goslinga .

Using experimental film techniques that recall the work of Trinh Minh Ha, The Poojari’s Daughter weaves dramatic footage of a South Indian temple goat sacrifice with the moving narration of the priestess Rajathiamma who performs the ritual. The film also includes interviews with Rajathiamma’s family and brief narrations by the film maker. Together, these create a vivid and unforgettably intimate portrait of the devotional worlds of South Indian Hinduism and a remarkable woman priest. 

Following the film, Professor Goslinga will offer food for thought through a discussion of the film, after which a small reception will provide more corporeal forms of food: specifically, South Indian food and beverages.

SCHEDULING [the computer system scheduling your courses is based on class standing, major preference, seat availability, the number of times you have previously requested the course and, when appropriate, whether you have met the prerequisites or have the permission of the instructor] = Tuesday, November 15

**Probably by Tuesday evening you’ll be able to see what courses you were scheduled for by the computer**

ADJUSTMENT [going through wesmaps and adding courses with seats still still available] = Staggered start times depending on how many courses you got. Those with 0-1 courses go at 8am on Wednesday, November 16 (you will receive an email indicating what time your adjustment starts)

Historian Khalil Gibran Muhammad, Director, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, New York Public Library will discuss The Condemnation of Blackness: Race, Crime, and the Making of Modern Urban America (Harvard University Press 2010).  Prior to joining the Schomburg, Dr Muhammad was a professor of history at Indiana University. Vote in Middletown Elections, Tues., Nov. 8

Dear students, 

Tomorrow, Tuesday, November 8th, is election day!

Polls will be open from 6AM to 8PM. Students will be voting at either the Senior Center, or at the Snow, Macdonough, or Spencer schools. 

Shuttles will be going to all polling locations continuously throughout the day, leaving from the Wyllys Ave. entrance of Usdan and outside the Butterfields dorms on Lawn Ave. If you need information about transportation on election day, call (609-472-5940). 

If you are unsure of where you will be voting, ask a van driver, or call the Registrar of Voters at (860-344-3518). 

Remember to **bring your WesID** or another form of photo identification to the polls. 

**Please note: any student who registered to vote is eligible to vote on Tuesday, regardless of whether or not they confirmed their residency with the registrar last week.**
