Volunteer Actors Needed for Unspeakable Acts & Know the Line for New Student Orientation — deadline May 4

Unspeakable Acts and Know the Line is a series of skits addressing sexual assault, relationship violence and alcohol issues that WesWELL sponsors during New Student Orientation.  This peer theatre piece was first performed at Wesleyan in 2002.   The performance is a powerful introduction to sexual assault and alcohol use on campus and provides a starting point for further discussion for this difficult but important topic.  Each year, the performers have put their own unique stamp on the piece(s) they perform, to make changes that help the audience understand the issues more clearly, and even add new skits.

Performers:  15-20 volunteers are needed. The more performers, the fewer parts each person would be required to play. Current students of all class years are welcome to participate.  Three skits require eight performers while the others are monologues or two-person dialogues.

Performance:  These skits are performed as “reader’s theatre”, where the performers carry a script to refer to rather than fully memorizing them. Performers are encouraged to be familiar enough with the material that they do not need to read from their script verbatim. The setting is very minimal and no costumes are worn, allowing audience members to use their imaginations to fill in details, based on what they are hearing.

Timeline:  Unspeakable Acts and Know the Line is tentatively scheduled for three or four group rehearsal(s) and two performances during the week of New Student Orientation.  Performers must be available for ALL sessions to participate and are encouraged to rehearse on their own as well.

Sign Up:   Friday, April 29 is the deadline to contact Tanya Purdy if you are interested in performing.  You need simply email or call and we will arrange to meet for a brief interview before the semester ends.

Tentative Rehearsals Monday, August 29, 2011 – Wednesday August 31, 2011, 12 to 4 pm
Tentative Performance Thursday, September 1, 2011, Evening, Crowell Concert Hall

Time Commitment:  Approximately 16 hours for group rehearsals, 2 hours for the performances (total), plus any individual rehearsal time on your own.

Early arrival into housing:  WesWELL will sponsor you for an early arrival.  We must have your full commitment, Wes ID and housing assignment information by May 4 in order to ensure housing accommodations can be made.

Acting Experience :  No acting experience needed, just an interest in educating your peers and addressing sexual assault and alcohol use on campus. An ability to read with feeling and a strong voice help.

Previous knowledge of sexual assault and alcohol issues:  It is helpful to have some knowledge since students may see you as a resource once you have performed in the skits. WesWELL can assist in providing resources to assist in learning more about sexual assault if you are interested.

Can I see the script before I decide?  Yes. Contact Tanya Purdy to find out when you can stop by to view a script.

Contact Tanya Purdy by April 29 to volunteer or if you have questions–Tanya Purdy , Director of Health Education

Wes International Relations Association Conference — Help Organize!

The Wesleyan International Relations Association (WIRA) would like to announce its plans for its prospective inaugural International Relations conference. WIRA plans to hosts International Relations Conferences annually, focused on a different region of the world each year, to give Wesleyan students, faculty, administration and community a chance to hear from specialists on the specific region. This year, WIRA, in collaboration with the Wesleyan Pakistan Flood Relief Initiative and South Asian Studies Certificate Faculty have decided to organize the conference on “Deciphering Pakistan and US-Pak Relations.” As part of this conference, we will invite academics, diplomats and journalists from all over the world to come to Wesleyan University and address the topic from their specific lens of expertise. Given the scale of the conference, we will require considerable planning for it. Thus, we would like to invite the Wesleyan student body to join the Organizing Team for the conference.

Topic – “Deciphering Pakistan and US-Pak Relations” Conference”

Despite being an important strategic player in South Asia, Pakistan is a mystery for many people around the world. Thus, the aim of this conference is to increase understanding and awareness about Pakistan, its problems and contributions. In league with this, the conference will also focus on US-Pak relations which have simultaneously strained and strengthened substantially after 9/11. Our speakers will analyze Pakistan’s geopolitical and social situation, and US-Pakistan relations in a global context.

What is the format of the ConferenceThe event is scheduled for 1st October 2011 at Wesleyan University. This will be a day-long conference which will conclude in the evening with a concert and cultural event. We will have 2-key note speakers, 2 panel discussions and lunch. The conference will be free to attend for all. However, we will charge a nominal fee for the cultural event and lunch. All proceeds will go to the Pakistan Flood Relief efforts.

Confirmed Speakers include Ahmed Rashid, Ambassador Howard B. Schaffer, Asim Ijaz Khawaja, Stephen Cohen, Hassan Abbas, Stanley Wolpert, Adil Najam, Shuja Nawaz and Mehreen Jabbar.

Recruitment of Organizing TeamThis will be the first International Relations Conference at Wesleyan University. We hope Wesleyan students will join the organizing team to help us start the tradition of IR Conferences at Wesleyan University. Not only will this be a great opportunity for students interested in International Relations to network with like-minded students, academics and diplomats but this will also give students great experience in organizing large conferences. We are looking for students for the following positions:

Registration Coordinator, Panel/Speaker Coordinator, Information and Communication Coordinator, Marketing Coordinator, Funding Coordinator, PR and Media Coordinator, Logistics Coordinator, Social Events Coordinator, Publication Coordinator, Web-Designer/Webmaster, Graphic Designer or Other (Please describe).

If you are interested in any of the aforementioned positions, please send an e-mail to achaudhry@wesleyan.eduwith your name, the position (if applicable) that you are interested in and your relevant background (just a few sentences should suffice).  I look forward to hearing from you and I hope you will join us in organizing what promises to be a highly informative and exciting conference!

Fan Van to Amherst — Sat., 4/23

Hi All,

It is true – the Fan Van, a bus that takes student fans to Wesleyan athletic away games, is happening again for the last time this school year. It will launch this Saturday April 23rd, with a bus going to the men’s lacrosse game against Amherst, one of our Little Ivy rivals.

1) People can reserve a spot for the Amherst game by emailing nokai@wesleyan.edu, stating their interest in reserving a spot. To preserve the fairness of the service, you can only reserve a seat for yourself (your friends must also reserve for themselves) unless it is an emergency circumstance. First come, first served. There are a pretty limited number of spots, so make your reservation now before bus seats run out.

2) On Saturday, the bus will be leaving Wesleyan from Usdan at 12:15pm. The bus will be leaving Amherst at 4:00pm and returning to campus at roughly 5:30pm.

3) You must come back on the bus on the return trip to Wesleyan. No exceptions! There will be a bus monitor with a list of student names ensuring that all students use the Fan Van both ways.

4) The trip is free of charge, but you must bring your best Wesleyan spirit!

5) Last chance to see our awesome men’s lacrosse team do some more damage in the NESCAC!

 Cheers for Wes,

Nicole Okai, WSA Transportation Committee Representative, and Zachary Malter, WSA Transportation Committee Chair

The lecture will take place in the Develin Room on the second floor of Olin, just off the main stairwell.

>From 6:30-7:00 and again after the lecture, Suzy Taraba, Head of Special Collections & Archives and University Archivist, will host an open house viewing of the Samuel Proal Hatfield Civil War Photograph Album and other selected items related to the Civil War in the Davison Rare Book Room, Special Collections & Archives (1st floor Olin).
