Severe Intoxication Panels

If a friend of yours experiences severe intoxication, this places them at high risk for alcohol overdose/poisoning and the resulting medical problems. 

thumbnailCA2KQXR2The Office of Public Safety, in conjunction with WesWell, the Dean of Students Office, and Res Life will be holding four Severe Intoxication Panels designed to help students understand the best course of action to take for a friend who cannot make an informed decision due to impairment.  The representatives on the panel will speak about the issues from their perspective.  The panel discussion will give you a chance to have questions about alcohol policies and procedures answered.  You will learn what the signs of severe intoxication are, what Public Safety will do when responding to a call for help, what the Dean of Students Office will do when a student is referred to them after being treated for intoxication, and more.   The panels will be held on the following dates and times:

About the Performance:
Emergency Response Studio was inspired by artist Villinski’s visit to post-Katrina New Orleans in August 2006. He wished he could transport his studio from New York to the Lower Ninth Ward to create work in response to the conditions he found. Instead he created Emergency Response Studio by playfully rethinking and transforming a 30-foot Gulfstream Cavalier trailer–virtually identical to the 50,000 trailers built by Gulfstream for FEMA–into a rolling, off-the-grid live/work space that can house displaced artists or allow visiting artists to “embed” in post-disaster settings. It will be installed on the Center for the Arts’ green and accompanied by an installation in Zilkha Gallery detailing Villinski’s construction process and featuring additional information on movable housing as well as green technology and building materials. Born in York, Maine in 1960, Villinski received a BFA with honors from The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, New York in 1984.

New Course!

CHEM 180:  Writing about Science

Course Course Description:  A writing intensive course open to both science and non-science  students interested in investigating and  writing about the content,  process  and human elements of science and nature in the various genres found current newspapers, magazines, scientific journals, monographs and scientific biographies.  The structures characteristic of each these forms will be critically considered, based on examples of each from the current literature.  Both practical matters in learning the craft of science writing as well as a consideration of special topics chosen on the basis of general relevance to science literacy will be included. Students will undertake a series of six writing assignments of progressively increasing length,   leading to a term paper in the form of a full article of the type found in Omni, Discover, or Natural History.   Students will be expected to pitch their proposed writing projects, read from their work in progress and contribute short responses to class topics on a weekly basis to a class blog.  The choice of topics for writing assignments will be tailored to individual student interests.  The WAS class will function both as a source of original writing and as an editorial board for the production of a new issue of Synthesis, Wesleyan’s webzine of science and nature writing.   This course fulfills an NSM expectation in General Education.  http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-1209726/Single-molecule-million-times-smaller-grain-sand-pictured-time.html

First Day of Class: Attendance & Course Level

If you are enrolled in a course, you must attend the first class or else the instructor can give your seat to another student.  You must either confirm through your portfolio that the instructor has dropped you from the course or go through the process of dropping it from your schedule yourself through your portfolio.  This is good information for you to know, especially if you want to check out another course that meets at the same time.  You risk losing the seat that you do have.

thumbnailCAG0PBU6If you are unsure about which level of course to attend, check out the course textbooks at Broadstreets Bookstore.  That, in conjunction with reviewing the course syllabus, talking with the instructor when the course meets, and consulting again with your faculty advisor should help you make a decision.

Enrollment in the University: Click “Enroll Me”

thumbnailCAUT985SYou must enroll in the University by 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 or you risk being administratively withdrawn. You must enroll–even if you still have unresolved holds–so you can participate in Drop/Add.

To enroll, visit the enrollment site in your portfolio in the Campus Life column and click on the “Enrollment, Holds and Addresses” link under “My Enrollment Status.”  Click on the blue “Enroll Me” button!

If you cannot see the “Enroll Me” button from your computer, you will need to go to one of the computer labs on campus or to the North College lobby to enroll.  Anyone enrolling late will be charged a fine of $25.
