Results: “Have a Heart for Haiti” Dodgeball Tournament

MANY THANKS TO ALL THE TEAMS WHO PARTICIPATED in the “Have a Heart for Haiti” Dodgeball Tournament on Sunday, February 14 in Bacon Field House!  And…

dodgeballCongratulations to team Off Constantly, who won the tournament.  They were one of the 41 teams (of 50 entries) who competed in the competition, beating out a dogged NF in a fierce final play-off.  The feisty NF battled a focused I Remember My First Bear and the tenacious Off Constantly fended off a cagey Mean Girls in an intense semi-final match to make it to the final round.  Earlier in the competition, The Paul Bunyans, Cheddar Schreddarzz, OJAXII and The Buffalo were aggressive challengers. Together, all the teams raised over $600 for Partners in Health’s Haiti Relief fund, after the “last team standing” donated a portion of their one-third winnings to the cause.

The Valentine’s Prize for Most Creative Team Attire went to the four women’s LAX teams, who were splendid in their dodgeball regalia, although Team Cupid, Broke Down Fools, Almonds and Elephants, and Aesthetic Ballers gave them a real run for the distinction.

REMEMBER who you played, REMEMBER what you wanted, and REMEMBER the good you did by playing. The competition, sponsored by the 2013 Class Council, will be back next year, 2011—same time, same place, same game.  Be there.

Stay tuned for tournament pictures, coming soon to a blog near you.

General Room Selection (GRS)

thumbnailCAH3T14HThe 2010 General Room Selection (GRS) process at Wesleyan University is about to start.  Remember, all undergraduate students are required to live on campus.  Therefore, if you will be a student at Wesleyan University in the fall of 2010, you MUST participate in the GRS process.

Beginning February 12, 2010 at 12:00 noon you will be able to access the General Room Selection site and explore your housing options for the 2010-2011 academic year.  You enter GRS through your student portfolio by clicking on “Room Selection” under “Student Life at Wesleyan”.

Please remember two important dates that are rapidly approaching.  All applications for Off Campus Housing are due by 11:59pm on February 21, 2010.  All applications for Program Housing and Community Based Living are due by 11:59pm on February 26, 2010

Rising sophomores:  Interested in living with five of your friends?  New to GRS this year, sophomores will be able to sign up in groups of six and select a cluster of rooms (4 singles and one double), usually referred to as a “Copenhagen”, located at the ends of the hallways in the Butterfields.  Watch for more information about the process, which will take place in late March.

You will be receiving many e-mails from the Office of Residential Life in the next few months as important dates draw near.  Please be sure to read all these emails, as well as the information contained in the GRS site.  You will not receive any hard copies of this information.  If you have any questions, please contact the Office of Residential Life by phone at 860-685-3550 or by e-mail at reslife@wesleyan.edu.

Black History Month Convocation Speech — January 31, 2010

IMG_1644I could stand here and philosophize about the implications of Black History Month, what we should do to promote solidarity, and pump my fist in the air. This would only be ironic, as I’d be acting out a personality that would be just that: pulled tight and full of hot air.  I’ve always tried to keep it real and not get caught up in ‘ABC movement’ or ‘XYZ movement’ because half of the people in them end up being full of hot air; a whole lot of gust with no direction.  In short, I’m simple, and I can only speak on the simple life I lead at Wesleyan.

One of the best times of my day is sweeping up hair from my large blue tarp. This is partly due to the fact that I can’t stand a dirty room and it bugs me when dust has the audacity to set up camp in my corner of the room. But nonetheless, I love sweeping up hair, because it means I just sent someone on their way with a new look, a new opportunity to present themselves.  As an apprentice barber I’ve seen a lot of heads. But somehow I’m still fascinated by the change I see in people from pre- to post-haircut. There is this aura that seems to spring up as they look into the mirror and see a new person.

Now, I know black folk love their hair. We love to cut it, shape it, curl it, straighten it, pick it out, comb it, brush it, wrap it, set it and wash it, and for those who can afford new clothes everyday, Jeri curl it. Our obsession with our follicles has spawned controversy and multi-billion dollar industries, and I admit I am apart of that love-hate divide.

But I err on the side of love. I love black hair. I do cut every type of hair, but I get a special feeling from cutting black hair. As a smorgasbord of a people, each black person’s head out there is different. And like a scientist, I enjoy discovering new species. With a customer’s request and my battery of tools and gadgets, I work away in my lab; the barbershop.  I comb, brush, fade, line, clip, straighten, and tease the hair to bend to my will creating something new that conforms to my customer’s vision.

With my research work done and my payment received, I feel as though, in my small way, I am supporting ‘a movement.’ Black folk’s grooming has always been tied deep into our culture, especially in our recent history here as African-Americans. The barbershop or the salon is the place of grooming, the CNN of the neighborhood, the gates from childhood to adulthood, and ultimately a pillar in the community.  I’m not claiming my measly ad-hoc ‘shop is something so monumental. But I do think that by servicing our brothers and sisters on campus, I’m helping support the SOC community at Wesleyan.

It’s funny what big thoughts come into your mind when you’re obsessively sweeping the floor…
