Five Year Academic Calendar Survey

Dear Students,

Please help decide Wesleyan’s next five-year academic calendar by completing the brief survey you received from Michael Whitcomb on April 11, titled “Help decide Wesleyan’s future Academic Calendar.”  The Educational Policy Committee is soliciting input from students, faculty, librarians, and staff in order to design a calendar best suited to the community’s preferences.  Considerations include: semester start and end dates, length and timing of breaks, and final exams and reading period.

Financial Aid Form Assistance — 4/18 & 19 and 5/8

Financial Aid Application Deadline May 15th

Having trouble filling out FAFSA, PROFILE, or completing your financial aid application???  The deadline for the application is May 15th. Don’t wait that late, get help now. The Financial Aid Office is hosting times in their office for students to stop by and receive the help they need (though you may stop in anytime during normal office hours). The Office is located on the 2nd Floor of North College and their phone number is 860-685-2800.

Times include*:   April 18, 9am-11am    April 19, 3pm-5pm    May 8, 11am-1pm, 3pm-5pm

*The Financial Aid Office is open Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 5pm. You can stop by anytime with any questions even those regarding the financial aid application process.

Elections for WSA Pres, VP and Senior Class Officers! Petitions due 4/20

Petitions are now available in the WSA office (Usdan 104) for WSA President, Vice President and for the Senior Class Officers.

Remember, the President and VP set the direction of the WSA.  They play a vital role in regular talks with the administration and serve as the lead student voices on budgetary issues, campus policy, and every issue that impacts students.

Members of the class of 2013, there’s also the opportunity to be a Senior Class Officer. The Senior Class Officers are an external committee of the WSA and plan Senior Events, pick the Student Commencement Speaker, and serve a vital role in keeping your class connected to Wesleyan after graduation.

Commencement/Reunion Employment — Apps due 4/20, 5 p.m.

Hey Juniors!

Reunion & Commencement 2012 is fast approaching (May 24th-27th), and you know what that means—we need student workers!  This is your last chance to work for Reunion & Commencement and it is also a great opportunity to see what it is you’ll be doing next year during graduation week! Work for University Relations, and aside from getting paid, you’ll also receive free transitional housing, have the unique opportunity to help out with Wesleyan’s biggest event, make lasting connections with alumni, and get the chance to say a final farewell to your graduating friends.  Potential jobs include working at the Registration site, hanging out with kids at Camp Cardinal, and, if you’re over 21, driving the shuttle vans. 

There will be a mandatory student worker meeting on May 22nd in Exley Science Center 150, at 5:30 PM.  We will provide your schedule for the weekend, among other things, at that time. 

The Student Worker Application is available online at http://wesconnect.wesleyan.edu/rc-student-worker. Applications will be accepted until Friday, April 20th at 5:00 PM.  We will notify you of your employment status no later than Wednesday, April 25th. 

 If you are employed for Reunion and Commencement, University Relations will provide transitional housing until May 28th —you will not need to apply separately through ResLife!

Help with Diversity Week at Middletown High School — May 2

Please see below for the details about Diversity Week at Middletown High School. I’ve signed up as a speaker, and I hope you will consider doing so as well.  It’s a fantastic opportunity to enrich the lives of local students in just one hour, but it can only succeed if we get enough speakers to enable meaningful personal connections and small group discussions.

BIGGEST DIVERSITY WEEK YET!

Middletown High School has a long tradition of supporting diversity in our community.  As part of that tradition, for the last several years MHS has hosted a Diversity Week devoted to raising awareness and encouraging acceptance of diversity.  To that end, the school has sought to bring in speakers who can share personal experiences that are relatable to our students and provide insights regarding the issue of celebrating, rather than fearing, diversity.  This year MHS is planning its biggest coordinated effort yet.  The school hopes to bring in 50 different speakers, discussing a variety of different experiences from a multitude of different backgrounds, to share their stories and highlight the beauty of diversity.  Every student in the building will have the opportunity to select and listen to a speaker/topic of individual interest.  This ambitious event requires a great deal of coordination, and we need help attracting and lining up speakers. 

 The details of the event are:   When: May 2nd from 9-10am     Where: Middletown High School

Format: One speaker for twenty five kids in a classroom setting with two faculty members to assist, for approximately 50 minutes of discussion.

Who: Anyone who has a story to share and inspire kids? Specific areas of diversity include race, ethnicity, religion, socio-economic, physically handicapped, learning disabled, sexual orientation, gender, military service, political, or anything else that might relate to diversity or discrimination.

What is essential to this task is that we have the required number of speakers to be successful.  If you know anyone who would be willing to participate in our event and volunteer their time to speak with kids for a worthy cause, please contact Trevor Charles at charlest@mpsct.org.

 

 

Summer Employment Abroad App. due 4/15

I wanted to let you know of a very exciting international internship opportunity from Allrecipes.com. They are looking to place interns in 17 countries to learn about local culture and recipes, and blog about them weekly. The internship is PAID, $15.00/hour for 40 hours a week (10 week internship). In addition, they will pay all expenses to train you in their Seattle office at the beginning of the summer. This is an excellent opportunity for those going home internationally this summer, or those looking to spend the summer abroad. Opportunity is open to ALL CLASS YEARS, and both American and International students! Deadline to apply is April 15th!
