Office of Behavioral Health for Students (OBHS)

OBHS is located at 327 High Street (Davison Health Center).  Call 685-2910 to schedule an appointment.  Any Wesleyan student is entitled to use our services and all students are WELCOME!  You don’t need to be “falling apart” to make an appointment.  If you have an issue you’d like to discuss with a therapist, one of our staff will be available and thumbnailcafw1o2hinterested in working with you.  OBHS practices a time-limited model of psychotherapy-this schedule seems to match the pace of student’s lives.  Our experience shows that a significant number of students find that five sessions are adequate for resolution of their issues while others need more time.  When optimal treatment frequency is greater than what OBHS can provide or if the student wishes to see someone off-campus, a private therapist should be considered and we encourage the student to discuss with OBHS what would be most helpful. 

OBHS appointments are scheduled for mornings or afternoons and we make every effort to offer an appointment to fit the student’s schedule-usually within a week.  If you have an urgent situation and indicate that it is urgent, an OBHS therapist will talk with you within a few hours at the most.  If you need to reschedule, postpone or cancel your appointment, give us as much advance notice as you can.  This helps other students (who may want an appointment) and allows OBHS to better serve you.  In case of an emergency after hours or on weekends, an OBHS therapist is always on call when the University is in session and can be reached by calling 685-2910 (listen carefully to the phone prompts that access the on-call therapist).

Davison Health Center Welcomes You

thumbnailca8m3jv2The staff at the Davison Health Center wishes you a healthy and safe start to your academic career. The Health Center provides a full range of health care services by appointment. Check out our website to find out all we offer. Please call 860-685-2470 for appointments and information. The same phone number can be used after hours to reach the physician on-call.

The Health Center is staffed by physicians, nurse practitioners, a physician associate, and nursing personnel who provide comprehensive primary care services for illness or injury to students. The staff provides an array of clinical and health education services, including assessment and treatment of illnesses and injuries, health, wellness, disease prevention counseling, nutritional counseling, international travel counseling, immunizations, allergy injections, HIV testing and counseling, and referral to outside specialists. The Health Center provides basic laboratory testing and a dispensary for many prescription and over-the-counter medications for a small fee.

Please note that a $10 no-show fee for missed appointments is in effect. Be sure to cancel an appointment within 24 hours to assure you are not billed and to give other students an opportunity to have an appointment.

Cable TV–optional sign-up by 8/7

thumbnailcab64h0sThrough an agreement with Wesleyan University, students may subscribe with AT&T to provide cable television service to their residential unit.  The U-Verse 100 package costs $49 per month, and additional set-top boxes (to be able to access the cable service in more than one room) cost $7 per month.  Upgraded packages are also available.  Interested students should call 860-685-4499, and leave your name and phone number, and best times to reach you.  A representative from AT&T will call you to obtain the necessary additional information.  If you plan to share the cable service with someone with whom you will be living, only one of you needs to contact AT&T.  If you already gave your name and number to the AT&T representative during room selection, you do not need to call, unless you have not yet heard from them. 

In order to have your cable hooked up prior to your arrival on campus, you must call the number above by August 7.  Requests for service received after that date will be scheduled after students arrive, and you will need to be present for the technician to do the installation.

Campus Culture

 Wesleyan is an amazing place with great people and plenty of opportunities to get involved.  If you have not already been to campus you will soon come to experience that Wesleyan is unlike most other college cardinal2campuses.  Students here are involved at every level of planning events, programs, and concerts as well as Wesleyan is an amazing place with great people and plenty of opportunities to get involved.  If you have not already been to campus you will soon come to experience that Wesleyan is unlike most other college campuses.  Students here are involved at every level of planning events, programs, and concerts as well as participating in musical groups, theater and dance troupes and learning about university governance and decision-making.  While some college campuses suffer from having “nothing for students to do,” Wesleyan has so many lectures, programs and events that it is often hard to decide what things you won’t do! 

On September 18, outside the Usdan University Center, the Wesleyan Student Assembly (WSA) will host the Student Activities Fair for all students. This is a great way to learn about all of the student clubs and organizations around campus as many of them begin their recruiting at this event.  Stop by the fair and learn about all of the things you can get involved with at Wes and then choose one or two groups to try out.  If you don’t find something that interests you, start a new club!  Some students join several groups and soon find that their academic course work doesn’t leave them time to do it all. During your first semester, focus on your academics and maybe a couple of activities and/or a campus job.  During the spring with a semester behind you, if you still want to take on more activities, then get involved with another group. Wesleyan truly is an amazing place and we are excited for you to learn how you can leave your mark here! If you have any questions feel free to stop by my office on the first floor of North College.

Louise Brown, Dean for the Class of 2013

img_4626Louise Brown is the Dean for Academic Advancement and the Dean for the Class of 2013.  Hailing from Minnesota, Dean Brown graduated from Mount Holyoke College with a B.A. in political science before earning her Ph.D. at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst in the same discipline.  Prior to her work at Wesleyan, Dean Brown was at Connecticut College and Eugene Lang:  The New School for Liberal Studies (formerly part of the New School for Social Research).  Married to a great photographer, she has two kids, grows roses, and sings in a rock band (Busted Roses), among other things. 

So what does a class dean do?  A class dean monitors students’ progress towards graduation (although students are responsible for knowing and meeting the graduation requirements!), provides general academic advice and support, helps students to understand the academic regulations and resolve academic issues, and refers students to the appropriate resources on campus.  She works with students from their entry as first-years to their graduation as seniors, and so serves as a “go-to” person for students’ four years at Wesleyan.  Dean Brown also teaches in the government department when she has a chance.

Dean Brown holds regular drop-in hours and also is available by appointment.  She is excited to meet each member of the great Class of 2013, so do come to her office at 202 North College or call her at 685-2758 to set up a time to meet.

Fire Safety…or What Not to Bring

Throughout the year, Campus Fire Safety and Res Life staff will conduct health and safety inspections in all student residences.  As you begin packing your belongings and prepare to depart for Wesleyan, it’s important to keep the following in mind:

  • Candles, incense, used smoking materials and cooking appliances in student rooms are the most commonthumbnailcaj53hej fineable offenses
  • Students should review the list of prohibited items on the fire safety website
  • Campus Fire Safety will confiscate and fine $100 for each prohibited item
  • Campus Fire Safety will notify Public Safety if any weapons or drugs are found during room inspections
  • Campus Fire Safety will notify the Dean’s Office if any alcohol is found in rooms of students presumed to be under 21

Your Meal Plan: August 1 Deadline

thumbnailcav225dvChoosing your meal plan…seemingly an easy decision, but make sure you have all the facts before you decide.  Your Wesleyan dining experience is run by Bon Appétit, which earned this past year the highest dining satisfaction rating (almost 80%!) ever at Wesleyan University, so you can be sure you are getting a great product! When selecting your meal plan, be sure to pick the plan that you really think will meet your needs.  Pay attention to the number of meals each plan averages per week and, based on your usual eating habits, pick the one you think meets your style.  Unused meals do not roll over to the next semester, so you want to use meals before points whenever possible.  You can always add points on, but unused meals are lost so pick the plan that will allow you to get the most out of your dining experience.

Here is a summary of the meal plan information for 2009-2010:

Waste Not’s Campus Tag Sale

FURNISH YOUR DORM THE WESLEYAN WAY WITH ITEMS FROM THE WASTE NOT TAG SALE!

Waste Not! is an EON (Environmental Organizers Network)-sponsored effort run by the Sustainability Interns to reduce unnecessary waste during move-out and encourage items to be recycled from year to year.  At the end of the thumbnailca661rsbspring semester, EON collects unwanted items and then, in the fall, we hold a HUGE tag sale to sell those items back to the community, thereby keeping valuable items out of the landfill and in circulation. Proceeds from the sale will go to local charities and Sustainability at Wesleyan.  We’ll be holding the sale September 5, 6, and 7 from 2-5 p.m. each day at Mocon, the round building between the Nics and Hewitt.  It’s gonna be awesome.

To Bring…or Not To Bring

thumbnailcaby1u5cIf you are looking for guidance on what items to bring with you to campus besides your clothes, toothbrush and computer, check out the links below for suggestions. Naturally, you may pack items we have not listed here due to your unique, personal needs. You also may want to check with your roommate to see what items can be shared. Pay close attention to the “prohibited items” list; possession of these items in your room can result in fines and confiscation of the item.

If you did not upload your photograph before the July 19 deadline, then you must mail it to the following address, so that your ID can be ready for you on arrival day:  Wesleyan University, WesCard Office, North College Room 111, 237 High Street, Middletown, CT  06459.  Please include your name and WesID and mark the outside of the envelope, “Photo Enclosed.”  Do not write on the photograph.
