Film Screening: Kubrick’s Paths of Glory

From the Friends of Wesleyan Library,

Screening: Stanley Kubrick’s “Paths of Glory” (1957)

Thursday September 9, 2010 – 8 pm, Goldsmith Family Cinema

The futility and irony of the war in the trenches in WWI is shown as a unit commander in the French army must deal with the mutiny of his men and a glory-seeking general after part of his force falls back under fire in an impossible attack.” (IMDB.com)

This screening is part of “The Adaptation Series” a collaboration between The Friends of the Wesleyan Library and the Center for Film Studies exploring the translation of literary texts to the screen.  The film will be preceded by brief introductory remarks by Erhard Konerding, Government Documents Librarian, and Marc Longenecker ’03, Programming and Technical Manager, on WWI and Kubrick’s visualization of Humphrey Cobb’s novel.

Moving In

For those of you moving in tomorrow, Saturday, think about what it was like at this time last year.  What a difference a year makes!  I was talking with a sophomore yesterday who said how excited she was to get back to Wes and how great it felt to be returning to a familiar place.  Pretty cool.

Good luck with move-in and welcome back!  I look forward to a great year!

HIST210: American Jewish History

History 210:  American Jewish History, 1492-2001

Prof. Ron Schatz,  Mon. & Wed. 2:40-4 p.m.

This course considers the successive waves of Jewish immigrants who have come to colonies in North America and the United States, how they and their descendants have fared, and their role in the larger society.  Among the issues we’ll look at are these: the reasons for migration; philo-Semitic and anti-Semitic of Gentiles; where Jews settled, why, and their role in the economy; the rise of Reform Judaism and the Orthodox response; cultural clashes between German and East European Jews;  participation in political movements, including socialism, Zionism, civil rights, feminism, and neo-conservatism; responses to Czarist Russia, the Balfour Declaration, Nazi Germany, and Israel; distinctive cultural contributions to genres ranging from music and novels to sports, comics, and film; and changing family and social practices.

Waste Not’s Campus Tag Sale — 9/4 & 9/5

Waste Not! is an EON (Environmental Organizers Network)-sponsored effort run by the Sustainability Interns to reduce unnecessary waste during move-out and encourage items to be recycled from year to year.  At the end of the spring semester, EON collects unwanted items and then, in the fall, we hold a HUGE tag sale to sell those items back to the community, thereby keeping valuable items out of the landfill and in circulation. Proceeds from the sale will go to local charities and Sustainability at Wesleyan.  We’ll be holding the sale September  4 and 5 from 1-5 p.m. each day at the Spurrier-Synder Hockey Rink in the Freeman Athletic Center. It’s always an amazing event and everything goes quickly, so arrive as early as possible!

If you have any questions regarding the tag sale or sustainability at Wesleyan, feel free to shoot us an email at WESustainability@gmail.com.  We look forward to seeing you all there!!

Celebrating Students 2013!

We want to celebrate your accomplishments and achievements!

If you did something this summer about which you are proud or that was a real learning experience, let me know!  If one of your  Wes friends did, let me know!  Whether it was related to work, travel, school, an internship or a special event, let’s get it up on “Celebrating Students,” the virtual column that showcases and shares your experience.  How cool is that?

Jim Kubat: Soph Liaison to the CRC

The CRC liaison with the sophomore class is Jim Kubat, Associate Director and Pre-Law Advisor.  He provides general career advising, with a particular focus on careers in law and public service (government and the private nonprofit sector).

Jim says, “If a student has not visited the CRC at least once during the first year, it is essential that he/she comes in during the fall of sophomore year and meets with one of our counselors for a full-length appointment.  We want to see everyone: those students with no career plans and those who are further along with their planning.  Explore your options, discuss your goals, review your resume, learn about summer internships, and get on track!”

Go to the CRC!  Get a feel for the office and what is available to you.  It is never too early to explore and discover.
