Constitution Day Talk: “Constitutional Decision Making at the Forefront of Technology: How Courts Decide Cases Where There is Little Guidance”

The Honorable Mark R. Kravitz ‘72, P ’00, United States District Judge, will talk on student social networking, the First Amendment and the ability of schools (particularly high schools) to discipline student behavior that occurs on social networks. The conduct at issue can range from cyberbullying other students, to defamation of students or teachers, to overt threats against students or teachers, to disruptive speech directed at fellow students or teachers. The Supreme Court has not yet addressed student speech occurring on social networks and outside of school grounds on the Internet. That leaves lower courts (not to mention school officials) with the difficult task of assessing whether the Supreme Court’s prior precedents on First Amendment speech and student discipline provide much guidance when assessing whether student discipline for using this new technology violates the First Amendment.

Celebrating Students 2013: Eric Stephen
This summer I interned with the Pennsylvania Diversity Network (PDN), Pennsylvania’s largest LGBTQ rights 
organization. Since Pennsylvania has no state law that protects its residents from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, PDN has proved instrumental in passing local laws, making Pennsylvania the state with the most inclusive local laws but no state law. During my time at PDN, I focused largely on non-discrimination policy reform and legislative action. I spent a large amount of my time going to pride festivals and getting attendees to sign letters to their federal legislators to support a battery of bills currently in Congress that would aid non-discrimination reform—from passing ENDA, to repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and restrictive immigration policies.
A secondary focus of my internship was a photo project called “575 Same-Sex Couples: Facing Inequality,” which gave a face to Pennsylvanians who are discriminated against due to the lack of inclusive state laws concerning discrimination and marriage equality. For the project, PDN photographed couples exclusively from the Lehigh Valley area (where we are centrally located) and tabulated data about the couples, such as the number who have raised children or work as medical professionals, just to name a few. For the project, I worked principally at recruiting couples at pride festivals as well as editing and framing the photographs. Currently, the photo project is being featured at Bucks County Community College in hopes of aiding judiciary action in the area.
Before leaving home, I began the process of reforming my old school district’s non-discrimination policy to include sexual orientation and gender identity. Though this process could take up to a school year to fully reform, I am optimistic that these changes will be implemented and that LGBTQ students at my old school will never need face the same type of discrimination that I had to face growing up in Pennsylvania.
Hosts Needed for Prospective Students
The Office of Admission has a special request……
The Admission Office is looking for freshman or sophomore students willing to host a prospective student through our Over-Night Hosting Program. Would you please host a prefrosh for an evening this semester?
Here is how it works:
The visiting student arrives at the Admission Office at 4:15pm. (Sun., Mon., Tues., Wed., Thurs. nights)
- The hosting student meets the student at Admissions and takes them to their residence to drop off sleeping bag, etc. Then the host takes their guest to Dinner at the Usdan University Center. Each visiting student is given a dinner meal ticket by the program. Please note if you have a commitment at 4:15pm, you may have a friend pick up your guest and keep them company until you are free.
- The host takes them to their evening class if necessary, to a lecture or event, or simply shows them around. It is up to the host and visitor.
- In the morning, the host and visitor may go to breakfast together or on their own. The visitor then attends classes, events, or interviews.
It is that easy! We are only asking for 1 or 2 times a semester!
