Summer Employment Abroad App. due 4/15

I wanted to let you know of a very exciting international internship opportunity from Allrecipes.com. They are looking to place interns in 17 countries to learn about local culture and recipes, and blog about them weekly. The internship is PAID, $15.00/hour for 40 hours a week (10 week internship). In addition, they will pay all expenses to train you in their Seattle office at the beginning of the summer. This is an excellent opportunity for those going home internationally this summer, or those looking to spend the summer abroad. Opportunity is open to ALL CLASS YEARS, and both American and International students! Deadline to apply is April 15th! Student Leadership Awards! Nominations due 4/12

Each spring the Dean of the College Office offers Leadership Awards to students and student organizations for exceptional work and dedication to campus and community involvement throughout the academic year.If you are interested in nominating a student or a student organization, please read the information below and then continue to the Nomination Form. All nominations are due no later than 5pm on Thursday, April 12, 2012.

Reading by Dorothy Wickenden, Author and Editor of the New Yorker 4/11, 8 p.m.

Come to the reading on Wednesday night by Dorothy Wickenden, Executive Editor of The New Yorker and author of Nothing Daunted, “an alternative Western.” The book juxtaposes “a saga about two cosseted women from New York” who went West to work as teachers in 1916 (one of whom was her grandmother) with the violence of the expansion of the United States in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

 Her reading is at 8 p.m. in Russell House. There is a q+a at 4:15 in Albritton 311 for students.

 

 

German Film Festival — 4/13 & 14

You are invited to attend the  

GERMAN FILM FESTIVAL – (Re)imagining Post-Industrial Urbanity: Films of the Ruhr Area, Germany

in Downey House 113 on April 13 and 14, 2012

 We will be showing three films from this large post-industrial area in western Germany. The first film, Bang Boom Bang by Peter Thorwart, will be shown on Friday at 7:00 p.m. The other two-Losers and Winners, a documentary by Ulrike Franke and Michael Loeken, and Solinoby Fatih Akin-will be screened on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., followed by a discussion. The introductory session by Sina Nitzsche, Visiting Assistant Professor of German at Oglethorpe University, and Kate Thorpe, Teagle Writing Fellow at Wesleyan will place these films in the context of the transformation through art and image-making that the region is experiencing.

The event is sponsored by the German House, German Studies Department, Writing at Wesleyan, and the Goethe Institute Boston.

Library looking for Student Opinions about Resources and Services

The library is looking for students to participate in one of two focus group discussions to help gather information about current library resources and services.  Free food will be provided for those who join in.  You can sign up for either Thursday evening, April 19, at 6:00 (which includes dinner) or Friday afternoon, April 20, at 12:30 (which includes lunch).  These conversations should take no more than an hour.  Space is limited, so we can only take the first 15 students who respond. To join either group, or if you need further information, please contact Andrew Klein, aklein01@wesleyan.edu, on or before Tuesday, April 17.

Battle of the Bands!! Go for it — 4/13!

Wesleyan’s annual Battle of the Bands is taking place on April 13th at Eclectic House! The winning band will open for Spring Fling on May 10th. Please email a demo (2 songs) to dbostick@wesleyan.edu by Tuesday, April 10th. Bands chosen to compete will be announced by Thursday.

UR Wants Your Opinion — RSVP by Tues., 4/10

Dear Student,

We would like your opinions. University Relations is working with a consulting team to create a message for the next Wesleyan fundraising campaign. We are preparing to raise more money than ever before through a capital campaign that will launch in the next year or so. Our top priority is to increase scholarship funds, while enhancing academic programs.

 

We need to hear from students as we define the best way to express Wesleyan’s needs. Why did you choose Wes? What is particular to a Wesleyan education? Student voices will allow us to create a campaign that resonates with our alumni and parents. Please come to one of two discussions and talk about Wesleyan.
